Special amusement areas in the International Fire Code and NFPA 101

These provisions apply to spaces where occupants are intentionally confused, disoriented, or delayed from leaving, such as haunted houses and mazes. Props, crawl spaces and set walls sitting in the egress path
Creative set design is the hallmark of a memorable escape room. But freestanding props, false walls, crawl-through tunnels, and tight passageways can block or complicate emergency egress. Codes require that the egress path is unobstructed, of minimum width (usually 36 inches), and leads directly to an exit with no hidden steps or confusing turns.
If you use crawl spaces or tunnels as part of a puzzle, these cannot be the required egress route. Every participant must be able to leave the room without crawling, squeezing, or moving props out of the way. Movable furniture, large puzzle boxes, or scenic elements sitting in the path can be flagged by an inspector, especially if they shift position during gameplay. Set walls must be built to code, especially if they are used to create mazes or blind corridors, and cannot reduce the egress width below the minimum.
If you want to use nontraditional passageways for game play, make sure that a standard, code-compliant exit route is always available. This might mean having a second egress door or designing props so they cannot tip into the corridor and block the path during a game.

Blackout rooms: exit marking that still works with the lights off
Many escape rooms use blackout effects, low lighting, or sudden darkness to increase suspense. Fire codes require that exit signage and egress paths remain visible and usable even when all normal room lighting is lost. In special amusement areas, this typically means illuminated exit signs with battery backup, photoluminescent markings, and emergency lighting fixtures that activate automatically when power fails.

Bringing your fire marshal in before you build the set
The most common reason for failed inspections is starting construction before involving your local fire marshal. Every jurisdiction interprets the codes a little differently, and some have stricter rules or additional permitting steps for special amusement areas. Early consultation can help you avoid wasted time and money on noncompliant build outs.
Bring your floor plan, set drawings, and proposed fire safety features to the fire marshal or building department before you start building.
